Overview

The Holy Family Catholic School - a DfES designated

Language College

In September 1999 The Holy Family Catholic School was successful in gaining specialist status as a Language College. This was mainly due to the hard work and determination of a small group of parents and teachers who met on a regular basis to prepare the bid for the Specialist School Trust and to raise the £100,000 needed for matched funding.

Over the subsequent years, this status has had a major effect on the MFL curriculum we are able to offer pupils at school.

The main three languages at The Holy Family School are French, German and Spanish. Every pupil comes into Year 7 with the opportunity to study two of these languages. Japanese is currently introduced in Year 9 to a small number of beginners and has proved to be very popular. The first GCSE examination in Japanese will take place in June 2005, hopefully leading to the first AS cohort.

Alongside these languages, Italian is offered as an extra curricular subject, with Urdu being available through the Associated Sixth Form.

A variety of MFL events are held throughout the year including cultural and exchange visits, special MFL days, theatre productions, quizzes and concerts. Every pupil and teacher is encouraged to become involved in the strong international dimension of the school.

As a Specialist Language College we are involved with a variety of other educational institutions including Braithwaite Special School, Trinity and All Saints College, Greenhead High School, our Confederation of schools and our 10 partner primary schools.

Adult evening classes in MFL are held at school.
