The Curriculum
Years 7, 8 and 9
In the first three years all students follow the National Curriculum consisting of Art, English, Drama, Geography, History, Music, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Science, Technology and Citizenship including Personal & Social Education. In addition students study two of the following three languages - French, German and Spanish.
In Year 7, students are taught in registration groups in all subjects except Mathematics where they are set by ability. Ability setting occurs in most subjects in Years 8 and 9.
As part of the Religious Studies syllabus in every year, students follow a course of ‘Education for Personal Relationships'. One part of this course in Year 7 includes sex education. This instruction is given within the context of the Catholic Church's teaching on faith and morals and the materials involved are most carefully and sensitively selected and used.
Years 10 and 11
The core subjects of the National Curriculum are followed by all students; these are English, Mathematics, Science and Personal Health & Social Education with Citizenship. As well as this all students take Religious Studies, ICT and a Modern Foreign Language. Students can then make a choice of three more subjects from a list that varies slightly from year to year but currently includes Art, Expressive Arts, Geography, Health and Social Care, Leisure and Tourism, Information Communication Technology, Spanish, History, Music, Business Studies, Technology and Physical Education (Sports Studies). The maximum numbers of courses, which a student may follow, are ten. Most courses will be at GCSE level but for some subjects such as Information Communication Technology, Art and Design and Science a number of our students will follow Vocational courses validated by BTEC or the other main examination providers.
A small number of students will follow an alternative Vocational GCSE Course in liaison with Leeds City College, Keighley Campus.
Students do not have a completely free choice of subjects. Guidance including career and vocational advice is given to individual children. Every effort is made to accommodate the wishes and aspirations of children and their parents within the context of a broad general curriculum and the constraints of the National Curriculum.
Most students on the completion of their courses will take examinations leading to a GCSE certificate. There is, however, a range of other examinations available, dependant on students’ abilities.
